After “graduating” from this mini-version of Security training, John presented me with something additional that completely took me by surprise. It was a set of credentials, complete with photo ID and a gold badge identifying me as a special agent for the Department of Defense Special Investigations Section.

I took them, gawked at them, and said: “What’s this for?”

John laughed and said: “This will allow you to carry a concealed pistol anywhere in the US. The best way to make sure you never get hassled about carrying a gun is to make you some type of law enforcement officer. The Department of Defense has lots of departments that have armed agents employed within them. The DOD Special Investigations Section is not one of them, though. It is a fictitious organization created by us, with the cooperation of the DOD, in order to allow a very limited number of CIA employees to carry firearms in the US without being questioned. Anyone attempting to contact the DOD SIS will end up being routed right here to Headquarters, where a small staff is always on duty and ready to verify the bona fides of any CIA employee authorized to act as an agent for that organization. With these credentials you will be able carry your handgun anywhere, except here at CIA Headquarters.”
